This ideogram is used by several
theosophic societies. The ideogram is a combination of the ancient Egyptian sign, a
gods' staff sign that is a symbol for
life and
rebirth. This sign, the
ankh, is placed at the center of the
star of the two opposite elements, fire and water, which is in turn placed in the
circle of eternity. The whole structure is then crowned with the
fylfot or
gammadion, which is here used to signify the continual
rebirth of metempsychosis.
This is one of several signs used to symbolize the
art of esoteric alchemy. The
sun sign is at the center surrounded by the two elemental triangles crowned with the Christian cross, all placed inside a circle representing the eternal or spiritual dimension and its endless possibilities.
This ideogram nowadays represents the Wiccan
religion. For Wiccan believers the five points of the star sign in the circle represent spririt, earth, air, fire and water, or love, wisdom, knowledge, law and power.
A version of this sign with the fivepointed star filled and with a small circle in its center,
, has been used on tanks and fighter planes in the USA as a war sign.
